Useful tips when purchasing your wedding rings

Choosing a ring, particularly a wedding or engagement ring can be a daunting experience, so you need total confidence in your choice of jeweller, (Drakes Fine Jewellers is a local Independent Jeweller)

Remember, when will I wear it? Will it be worn most of the time? If so, your ring will need to be durable.

It is an old adage, but a true one, that you get what you pay for. Don’t be misled by extravagant discounts or amazing deals in advertisements. Precious metals are sold on an international market and extraordinary claims are seldom what they seem.

The simple guide is to pay what you can afford and go for quality.

Allow up to a month before your wedding day when purchasing your wedding rings, as the majority of wedding bands are made to order.

Make sure your engagement ring is professionally polished and cleaned before the big day. We will do this for you with our compliments.

Make sure the style you choose will fit correctly alongside your engagement ring for comfort, thereby minimising wear.

Make sure the size is comfortable for you, too loose and the ring could slip off, too tight and the skin could be affected.

Above all, choose the best man wisely, as he will be responsible for your wedding rings on your special day!

The History of the Wedding Ring

Did you know that the custom of placing the wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand can be traced back more than a thousand years, and stems from the belief that the vein of love ran from this finger directly to the heart. Anthropologists believe that the first wedding rings were fashioned from woven grass though history now reveals that wedding rings became traditionally manufactured from gold.

The choice of style was limited to a few plain designs; normally referred to as the curtain ring. Choose your wedding rings carefully and visit an experienced jeweller who has the knowledge and expertise you deserve and remember…your wedding rings need to be robust enough to stand the test of time.
